The man who created this Jimny Evolution is named Ikuo Hanawa. Being built by Ikuo-san, this Jimny Evolution could easily shine on the slopes of “Dakar”. And it never went to Dakar, design and blueprints never planned it. But this baby brought and will bring joy to every pilot, it’s a machine capable of tackling the big boys toys. This is the fourth generation of the Jimny Evolution and it’s getting better and better!
First Jimny made by Ikuo Hanawa and Summit Racing from Japan was equipped with an engine capacity of 660 cm3, five-link suspension with Fox shocks, it was built in 1998 to participate in the Asian Cross Country Rally. Then, in 2010, another Jimny was prepared to participate in the famous Baja 1000. He used King shocks this time . The third car with engine capacity of 1600 ccm was built for Rally Mongolia 2012. This Jimny had a classic suspension, almost as original but on King shocks once again. All these cars are built as part of the technical requirements for standard vehicles (category T2).
As a result of performances of these machines Ikuo Hanawa came to the conclusion that it is time to move on to the next grade and to build a prototype in the T1 category standards. And here it is before you – Suzuki Jimny Evolution fourth generation, creation belongs to Ikuo-san and company Summit Racing, version 2013.
It took about 5 months to finish the car, from the initial sketches to the working-instance. The basis for the construction was the traditional ladder-type frame, but we had to alter the suspension completely. Front independent suspension on double A-arms was used. However, it also had to be strengthened. Finally, the optimal elastic elements and shock absorbers have been picked up. For the front suspension Ikuo-san used King 2.5 coilovers and the rear suspension was equipped with King 2.5 bypass coilovers.
After everything was proved to work, Hanawa sterted to look for ideal driveshafts and differential gearings. Main requirement was performance combined with endurance. he found what he was looking for, modified the engine with some performance parts and in the end got a 120 HP machine reliable and fast enough to make him happy.
All work on the “implantation” of non-standard components has been carried out with purely Japanese thoroughness and accuracy. Thus, engine, suspension, brakes … What else is needed to ensure that future pilots could keep the little monster on the track without any problems? Naturally, the right tires and wheels! This time the author of the project chose Yokohama Geolander, mounted on alloy wheels.
Body is recognized as a Suzuki Jimny, and as in the case of the standard machine, it is made essentially of steel. But racing applications require serious changes so the hood, bumpers and all three doors are made of composite plastic. As a result, despite the installation of heavier suspension components, larger fuel tank and a number of additional power plant systems, reinforced frame, the car was only 10 kg heavier than the original.
By the way, the safety cage is worth discussing in more detail. His ideas were tested by a computer simulation, and tested to stress and shock. It matches the inner space of the Jimny. Then the program was designed for automatic welding machines. The material selected. Seamless pipes of chromoly steel 4130.
Recaro seats were installed for two crew members. This model was chosen to provide best safety and best working conditions during off-road racing. Naturally, the added feature are five-point seat belts. In the rear compartment two spare wheels and tools are kept. Racing stuff happens and crew members must be prepared for the unexpected. As I mentioned, the construction of the machine took 5 months. Finally, the prototype was ready for the first time roll. Ahead of him – a program of tests and trials, during which the final tuning and improvements were made. This mighty baby was named Suzuki Jimny Evolution. Ready to fight!!!
