The Mud’n’rocks Xtrem challenge took place this weekend in the town of Alet les Bains, close to Limoux, near Carcassonne in the Aude department in France.
The race fgathered only 14 teams (8 Protos and 6 Prepared), which is below the profitability threshold of such an event, event which could not take place without a lot of volunteers.
Opportunity should be taken here to salute the excellent work and motivation of the entire organization team led by Laurent Labia and Eric Thomas.
The event started on Friday with some fast special stages and a night stage that were much to the taste of the competitors.
Saturday and Sunday, the competitors had to cover 30 areas carefully prepared by the organization team, one way and the other way round.
Most areas are monitored by a marshall to address possible penalties for safety tape, poles, etc. Other areas are self service, competitors have to punch their board card with orienteering clamps placed along the route.
Two scoring zones A and B, each regrouping half of the zones, were organized with a board where each crew hangs up the flag of the team on the certain area where the start takes place.
The site is beautiful, on ridges with views over the Aude Valley. The weather was favorable almost the entire weekend.
Gathering moments were organized at the hall of Alet les Bains, 5 km away from the race course; they were pleasant and friendly. A minute of silence was held on Saturday in memory of the victims of the 13/11 terrorist attacks in Paris.
If the crews were not very numerous, they were of an excellent standard and the battle was severe between the first two prototypes, the French crew AJS Sport Aymeric and Jean Charles Syre (Toyota) and Andorra crew Ramon Pujol / Albert Cabanes (Jeep). In the Protos category, came Mudracer from France (Cedric Porcher and Damien Kermorvant), Hostal La Font from Andorra (Jordi Betriu Diaz and Xavi Moorlans), Fernandes Brothers from France (Franck Fernandes and his father), Crawlers Pyrénéens from France (Regis Fillous and Eddy Soufflet)
In the Prepared category, Nicotroll team from France came first (Nicolas Pareau and Damien Bazire, Nissan), Excavacions Escala from Spain finished second (Land Rover Defender) and Simpson from France (Denis Lallemand and Thomas Guiaud) third.
The event is mainly sponsored by the casino Alet les Bains, Euro4x4parts, Outback Import, RLC Diffusion.
The event was covered by Matthew Dadillon from Offroad 4×4 magazine.
