I was walking one day through the city of Kustánszeg in Hungary when all of a sudden i hear a beautiful roar of diesel engines. I turned around and was astonished by a long Mercedes and Puch G snake. It was the Mercedes GAmboree G class meeting held from 3rd to 5th of July. The same thing, the Gamboree meeting is scheduled for 24th of September. Three days of joyful driving on the peninsula of Istria, in western Croatia.
Here’s what happened in Hungary, the same or better will happen in Croatia.
There was a total of 50 Mercedes-Benz G-Class and Puch G that were heavily customized to a large extent for tough off-road use or long adventures. Although, everyone is welcome, if you have a Mercedes AMG or a normal Mercedes G Wagon, we are waiting for you.
150 guests from over 10 countries, such as: Austria, Switzerland, USA, Poland, Germany, New Zealand, Slovenia, Slovakia, Romania, Hungary, Holland… The farthest team was from Holland, they had a nearly 1,600 Km long drive with their G “Klasse”. First vehicles were already driving for 2 days before the start of the G-amboree meting.
The Base Camp of the Gamboree meeting had a large beer tent, a bar and buffet, a camp for guests with rooftop tents, campers or tents. Approximately 5 ha of lage private area.
On Friday, the meeting finally started.
The 500m long offroad training ground had steep stairs, sloping rides, but also sections where you could put the pedal to the metal. Trail sections, mud pools…
After a dusty afternoon, the G boys went to the thermal bath with indoor and outdoor pools, what more could you want? In the evening they enjoyed a delicious Hungarian Buffett and a DJ afterwards.
Saturday morning was slow. Muddy and dusty roads, field and forest paths led to a Motocross Track, where they to enjoyd hardcore off road once again. Back at the basecamp – gastronomy at its best, again. Despite the dry season, there was plenty of mud to enjoy for three days.
Most of the cars went home on Sunday, but the hardest remained until Monday.
We’ll se you again in September in Croatia. The entry fee for four days of camping with rides and tours included is 200 euro. For more information contact firstname.lastname@example.org.
