The Welsh Xtrem, in Carmarthen – Wales, will be the opening race of the first Extreme Championship of Europe, an ambitious off road challenge promoted by the sport association Equipe France Classique in collaboration with some of most prestigious European 4×4 clubs.
Thanks to excellent teamwork, five countries – Italy, France, Spain, Portugal and Great Britain have joined forces to create the Europe Xtreme Challenge. Drivers and co-drivers of this motor specialty will be standing at the starting line of some of the most important challenges within the international scene.
“Equipe France Classique“, which owes its name to the timeless icon of Range Rover model, was born as a joke, it’s for those who chose to join their skills in the various off-road sectors and to make them available to future members – explains Santi Sturniolo, Simone Motosso and Fulvio Malaspina, president, vicepresident and adviser respectively. After participating in Superserie category conquering the top step of the podium in the season 2015 XTC Italy, the main goal has become to support 4×4 extreme enthusiasts and to promote this international European Xtreme Challenge championship 2016!
This project has achieved success far beyond their expectations: Friends from France, Wales, Spain, Portugal and Italy have contributed to the creation of the first European Xtreme Challenge championship! The choice of the events which now forms the challenge was justified by the importance of these events for extreme off-road, these are considered as some of the best races on the international 4×4 scene.
A huge thanks goes to clubs and the presidents that have allowed the realisation of the project: The Welsh Xtrem with Jason Nobby Morgan; XTC Italy with Nicola Bianchi; Xtrem Challenge Sud Ouest with Jean Marc Demandes; Xtrem Challenge Portugal with Miguel Neiva; Xtrem Canejan 4×4 with Adrian Gomez; Mud’n’Rocks with Laurent Labia.
There are two categories allowed for the championship: prepared and protos. First ones derived from production models, they must be of identifiable provenance, brand and maintained, with modifications, with it’s original frame; it can’t be completely removed from the body (bulkhead/firewall between engine and cockpit and roof over front seats), thus ensuring adequate safety standards for the team, and tires can not be taller than 94 cm and / or a development of 296 cm.
Prototypes, unique or production models but developed beyond the limitations are allowed to have any type of change as long as the frame is always connected to the wheels with an elastic suspension system. Finally the tires may not have height of over 112 cm and / or a development of 358 cm. Each category has a dedicated ranking: it is required that each team attens at least two races in the calendar in order to access the general classification. Each team per category will need to compete in at least two of events indicated in the calendar to qualify to receive points. Points are to be completed by getting the points in single event and will be awarded depending on the individual event results.
To participate in the Xtrem European Challenge it will be necessary to formalise the registration, even if you have already started a trophy: paying the fee, the competitors will receive a race number which will be maintained for the whole season. For 2016, the fee has been set to 150.00 Euro per team. The inauguration of the 2016 season of Europe Xtreme Challenge will be the weekend of March 4th/5th/6th in Wales, followed on April 16th/17th with Italian XTC in Attimis (Udine). From May 13th to 15th the championship will move across the Alps, to Bordeaux – France, with the Xtrem Challenge Sud Ouest and June 17th-18th-19th the teams will be engaged in Viana do Castelo, 50 km north of Porto, with the Xtrem Challenge Portugal. Another race will be held as a part of the XTC Italy on July 16th and 17th in Colle San Bartolomeo (Imperia) and then resume in September (2nd/3rd/4th) with the 4×4 Xtrem Canejan scheduled to Minas de Pontaut, in the Aran Valley, the Spanish Pyrenees. Later, the last race before final event will be in France again, in Alet-les-Bains (Carcassonne) with Mud’n’Rock from October 14th to 16th.
