We all know how damaging can the water be if it enters your engine. It is equally hazardous with dust too. You know that old sayin – “you can go fast, but I can go anywhere”. That’s what it is all about, tough off road terrain full of mud, water and dust. And we need some kind of protection.

1. What’s the use of a good quality snorkel?

Most manufacturers build engines that have air intakes facing forward in the car’s engine bay or inner guard, as close to the grille as possible, because this is where the air is coolest. A snorkel lifts your 4WDs air intake, normally to around the car’s roof height.

The snorkel prevents water and dust to get into the engine and the air becomes cleaner and cooler.

Installing a snorkel onto your 4WD is definitely in the list of top five things to do to make a 4WD more capable offroad and, unlike other modifications, it is relatively inexpensive. But beware of cheap Ebay snorkels. You won’t save much but could loose a lot!

2. What is an AIR RAM?

The air ram (head of the snorkel) separates water or moisture that enters the snorkel before it gets to the engine. Because water is heavier than air, the 90° bend of the air ram causes the heavier water to move to the outside surface where it can drain out.

There are various snorkel heads, but this one is most common.

3. Where to find good quality snorkels at a reasonable price?

Euro4x4parts has a wide variety of snorkels, for any 4×4 vehicle. They will provide you with detailed informations and instructions on how to mount your snorkel. Here’s an example of instructions.
