From time to time we come across a new event we didn’t know about. Here is the Ballut Winch Challenge organized by the AWDC off road club on Malta. We were always fans of off road races in old quarries. Malta is a beautiful country and it would be a shame to organize muddy races on such a small mediterranean island. Besides, rain in Malta is quite rare and old stone quarries are a perfect place to organize extreme off road races.
The club is called ‘All Wheel Drive Club Malta‘ (AWDC Malta). They are situated in Malta and they organize various types of offroad events including winch challenges, timed trials, navigation challenges and endurance events. All classes, from Standard and road legal 4x4s to big purposely built buggies. Events are mostly organised in disused quarries around Malta.
The Ballut Winch Challenge was held at Ballut Blocks Quarry in Burmarrad. On the day there were two tracks with a number of climbs and steep drops, where competitors competed against time and obviously could use their various winches as an aid to climb or go down safely. Some actually managed to pass certain areas without using the winch at the Ballut Winch Challenge.
Team Pitass Spider (Alan Zahra driver and Johann Vella navigator) took 1st place in class and 1st place overall. Adrian Caruana prepared this short introduction but he’s a great photographer too. Check it out below!
